Downloadable Content Brats

November 7, 2009

StevenColumn

Downloadable content is a great thing. It gives you a bit more life out of your favorite games and the game creator gets a little more cash out of your purchase. However, this technological break through has had some negative consequences. Downloadable content has made consumers less excited for sequels

. Unless the sequel is on a new system, claims to be ground-breaking, or uses a completely new engine, most of us aren’t interested. But why? What’s wrong with buying a $45 game with $45 worth of new content? Games like Super Mario Galaxy 2 and Katamari Forever have been completely over looked by even the biggest fans of the series.

A sequel doesn’t have to be a completely different game because it’s a sequel, a new installment. Especially since it’s becoming easier and easier to pirate new content online, developers have seen more of a profit from creating completely new games.

Now doesn't this game look like fun?

So what’s so wrong with new content? You liked the first game didn’t you?

Halloween is Just a Big Anime Convention

November 1, 2009

stevencolumnRaidenIf you ask a normal person who they’re gonna be for Halloween they’d probably say “Edward Cullen” or “a slutty kitten”. But if you ask a nerd they’re probably gonna name some obscure video game character. I mean for us your Frankenstein is our Mario. It never evens crosses are minds that we could go as something somebody else will understand.

So just think about what you’re doing for a Halloween. If you’re gonna do something nerdy with your friends then go ahead and be something obscure but if you’re going to a regular party or trick or treating try to be something a little more recognizable. Unless you make a perfect Raiden helmet. Then do whatever the hell you want.

Anyways, even though Halloween is over doesn’t mean you can’t appreciate some good scary movies. So here’s a list of my top ten best:

1.Psycho

2.Exorcism of Emily Rose

3.Children of the Corn

4.Dawn of the Dead

5.Shawn of the Dead

6.Paranormal Activity

7.Cujo

8.Arachnophobia

9.Halloween

Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days: Review

October 25, 2009

StevenColumn

Oh, Square Enix I do love you so. 358/2 Days is a game designed and made for Kingdom Hearts fans only. You won’t get the story or appreciate the game if you never played a Kingdom Hearts game before. Because of this I will be rating this game from the perspective of the intended audience (which would be me).

Story: The storyline is very interesting for the most part. Playing through the events you have already experienced in previous games form Roxas’s perspective is actually really engaging. The lack of animated cut scenes and voice acting is made up for with wonderfully written dialogue. Aside from a few boring unnecessary scenes of Roxas eating ice cream the story is fantastic.

Menu Design: The menu designs are easy to navigate and learn. You use a panel system similar to the one in Chain of Memories. It is slightly annoying that you have to level up with “level up panels” but its fun to be able to edit how you fight. The shop is more synthesis-based which gives the game more replay value. The items in the shop are almost all worth obtaining. Unlocking and upgrading are one of the best aspects of this game.

Gameplay: The gameplay is just a slightly simplified version of Kingdom Hearts 1 and 2. Scrolling through magic and items in real time gets frustrating but shortcuts ease the pain a little bit. The lock-on and camera system is the most annoying aspect of the game. You have to tap R every single time you want to change the camera angle and there is no auto camera. A new interesting mechanic in this game is Limit Breaks. It’s essentially like a Final Smash in Brawl but it’s less cheap because you can only use it if your HP is low.

Extras: Mission Mode is the only extra you get in this game but man, what an extra! You get to play as every organization member and Donald and Goofy. Each character has their own Limit Break and attack system.

Final Verdict: 9/10 Great for Kingdom Hearts fans but if you aren’t then 358/2 days is not the game for you.

You Got Literary Elements in My Gaming… You Got Gaming in My Literary Elements… Yum!

October 17, 2009

Since the video gaming industry began people have said that it was dangerous for the kiddies. I mean mothers were up in arms because of CIRCUS ATARI. What a violent game that was… Smashing their little pixel heads into the little pixel floor.

Non-gamers, not just parents, are still horrified of the idea of video games and all them violent Grand Theft Autos…. But even though video games have definitely gotten more violent… They are slowly becoming more meaningful. I’m sorry if that scares you.

Video games have began to grow these little things called “stories”. It’s not just about smashing alien brains in anymore. It’s about smashing alien brains with a purpose.

Kingdom Hearts, Half-Life, Mass Effect, Bioshock, Sly Cooper all have in depth stories that could easily be placed on a literary level.

Video games aren’t rotting brains… If gaming keeps going in this direction, it’s probably going to teach the youth more lessons than BOOKS ever would. Books… Gross…
